AUSTRO
- HUNGARIAN FORCES
I.
The following items are required:
German
items may be substitued for the following Austrian items: helmet,
gasmask and carrier, trousers, boots, shirts, legwraps and suspenders.
All other items worn/carried by Austrian troops must be of the appropriate
A-H pattern.

I.
Uniform:
-
Unless
otherwise noted, Prussian or German items may be worn. Therefore,
the description of the following items are for specific Austrian
uniform and equipment that is authorized to be worn or carried.
A.
Field cap (Bergmütze or Kappi).
- All ranks will
wear the forage cap. NCOs may wear a leather visor, all enlisted men
are to wear a cloth visor.
- The field cap
is a peaked cap design with two buttons located in the front.
- Manufactured
of a field grey or grey green wool or wool blend material.
- Machine sewn
throughout (except for attachment of the lining to the cap body).
- A small field
grey painted or tarnished brass cockade with the initial "K"
is worn on the front of the enlisted cap close to the peak. Officers
may opt to wear the officers shako in field or stone grey, instead
of the enlisted style cap.
- On the left side
of the cap a tin oak leaf or a sprig of green may be worn in spring
and summer, and straw during the fall or winter.
B. Tunic
- Constructed of
field grey, grey-green, or stone grey wool or wool blend fabric in
the M.17 instead of the M1909 pattern.
- Front buttons
are covered by a flap.
- Six metal or
vegetable fiber buttons are used for the fly front, one per cuff and
for each shoulder strap.
- A shoulder roll
may be worn on the right shoulder of the tunic or greatcoat.
- Standing portions
of the collar with standing portions not exceeding 2 in. in height.
- Breast are scalloped
and are placed at a slight angle, The upper pockets are slanted downwards
towards the center, and the bottom pockets slanted upwards toward
the center.
- Sleeves are secured
by one button, finished, but not turnback. Late war style sleeves
may be ungusseted or unflapped, but will have a small button one inch
from the bottom of the sleeve, along side the rear seam of the sleeve.
- May or may not
have a rear seam.
- Senior NCO and
Officer tunis may be the same pattern as the enlisted model, or the
"Karl Bluse", which lacks the shoulder straps, has a heightened
collar similar to German officer tunics, and has domed exposed buttons
instead of a fly front closure. There are six buttons down the front,
with the pocket flaps also being closed by similar exposed buttons.
Buttons may be cloth covered or subdued (painted field grey, or chemically
darkened).
C.
Trousers
- Constructed of
field grey or grey-green wool or wool blend fabric.
- Will have a hidden
fly front closed by buttons.
- Two slash pockets
in the front with button closure. If an identity locket is worn, it
is tied to the button hole of the right pocket, with the locket worn
inside the pocket.
- No half-belt
in the back.
- No watch pocket.
Will be one of two
of the following styles:
- German stone
grey tousers or...
- Dismounted style
Reitenhosen.
II.
Equipment:
- Unless otherwise
noted, Prussian or German equipment may be used.
A.
Helmet
- Only the Hungarian
M17, Berndorfer patterns, or the German or Austrian M16 patterns may
be worn.
- Must be of steel
construction.
- German helmets
must be worn with Austrian style helmet covers.
Must have a functional chin strap made of cloth with leather reinforcements
and metal eyelets for a roller buckle closure.
B.
Belt and Belt Buckle
- The belt may
be brown or black and constructed of leather with the rough side out.
- The belt may
be one of either style:
1) a plain
belt, at least one inch wide and with a roller buckle, or
2) a belt similar to the German issue belt with a buckle constructed
of either brass or steel. The plate will be decorated with the Austrian
eagle, or the Hungarian crest.
C.
Ammunition Pouches
- Only double-pocket
M95 Mannlicher ammunition pouches are authorized to be worn on the
belt.
D.
Bayonet, Scabbard and Sling
- Only the M 95
Mannlicher bayonet and scabbard are authorized to be worn.
- Must be an actual
bayonet (i.e. cast or molded replicas are not authorized.
- The frog is constructed
of natural brown or dyed leather, smooth or rough side out.
E.
Rifle and Sling
- Only the M95
Austrian Mannlicher carbine may be carried while operating crew served
weapon.
